Pacemakers, the most common way to treat bradycardia (a slower than normal heart rate) and atrioventricular block (a type of heart block in which the electrical signals between the chambers of the heart are impaired), help restore the heart’s normal rhythm and relieve symptoms by sending electrical impulses to the heart to increase the heart rate. Micra AV is a miniaturized, fully self-contained pacemaker that delivers advanced pacing technology to AV block patients via a minimally invasive approach.

How does it work?

The Micra AV is attached to the heart via small tines and delivers electrical impulses that pace the heart through an electrode at the end of the device. It does not require the use of wires, known as “leads,” to deliver pacing therapy.

The Micra AV has an internal sensor that detects cardiac movement, allowing the device to adjust pacing in the ventricle to coordinate with the atrium, providing “AV synchronous” pacing therapy. It is the first pacemaker that can sense atrial activity without a lead or device in the changer of the heart.

What is the battery life?

The Micra AV has an estimated battery life of 8-13 years.

How is the Micra AV implanted?

The Micra AV is implanted through a minimally invasive procedure. It is delivered directly into the heart through a catheter inserted in the femoral vein. It does not require a surgical incision or creating of a “pocket” under the skin, which eliminates any visible sign of the device and a potential source of complications.

Does it leave a scar?

The Micra AV is 93% smaller than conventional pacemakers. It is cosmetically invisible to the patient after implantation. It does not leave a chest scar, bump or visible or physical reminders of a pacemaker under the skin.

Are there any restrictions after having one implanted?

There are few post-implant activity restrictions for patients. There is a low dislodgement and infection rate with this pacemaker.
